Polson, Montana building new $17.6 million wastewater treatment plant
Polson, Mont. is finally getting a new wastewater treatment facility, to the tune of $17.6 million.
The existing system is outdated, having been built in 1981 and hasn’t been updated since 2001. It discharges into the Flathead River, where recreational use has applied stricter rules for water purity. According to the local Flathead Beacon, Polson “exceeded its discharges limits several times in the last decade,” earning it a number of monitoring violations and eventually a stiff $40,000 fine.
The new facility will be built in accordance with modern standards and discharge within regulations. The city is mostly paying for the new wastewater treatment plant with loans and grants. However, despite the need for this project Polson also needs to avoid falling into serious debt. As a result, residents have seen increases in their monthly sewer bills; the average sewer bill has more than doubled since the project began.
Polson mayor Heather Knutson stated that other options were considered, but would merely have been “bandages.” Officials felt that a new facility was the best and safest way to solve Polson’s wastewater discharge problems in the long term.
The new facility is scheduled for completion in 2018.
