Tunnel expansion to ease traffic in Virginia
Drivers of the I-65 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia will soon breathe a sigh of relief as a new expansion project seeks to ease the tunnel’s infamous congestion.
For some time now traffic on the two 2-lane, immersed-tube tunnels exceeded 100,000 vehicles per day during peak seasons. Thankfully, environmental studies have finally wrapped up for the venture.
The Federal Highway Administration issued a Record of Decision on June 12, which describes the expansion of I-64 and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to a consistent six-lane facility. The newly expanded tunnel will extend from I-664 in Hampton to I-564 in Norfolk, and should relieve congestion for beleaguered drivers. Authorities can now proceed with more detailed procurement and design of the project. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) will be released in late 2017 to those interested in competing for a contract to design and build the project.
